About the Richter Harmonica

In the mid-1820s, it was the Sudeten German worker and folk musician Joseph Richter who revolutionized harmonica technique in the Sudetenland. At that time, this border region between Saxony and Bohemia was known across Europe as the epicenter of instrument and harmonica manufacturing.

Joseph Richter designed a harmonica that allowed draw notes (unlike common harmonicas that only allowed blow notes). This eliminated the previously unavoidable pauses for breath. Another stroke of genius was restricting the instrument’s notes to those of a single key (diatonic). This meant harmonica players could no longer play wrong notes as long as they agreed on the same key with their fellow musicians. The third innovation was a new note layout that quickly proved successful and remains standard today.
